Trees are one of our most efficient carbon
capture and storage systems. They breathe
in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen,
locking the carbon into their roots, trunk,
branches, leaves and their soil.

They are so effective that about 20% of the
carbon emissions entering the atmosphere
are due to forests being cut down and
burnt i.e. deforestation.

REDD stands for Reducing Emissions from
Deforestation and forest Degradation.

REDD is based on a core idea: reward
individuals, communities, projects and
countries that reduce greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions from forests

REDD pays developing countries that reduce deforestation and degradation.

REDD has the potential to deliver large cuts
in emissions at a low cost within a short time
frame, and, at the same time, contribute to
reducing poverty and sustainable development.

REDD is the process for setting up a formal
trading scheme aimed at counteracting the
effects of deforestation.
